Phi Phi's limestone karsts rise 200 metres from the Andaman, remnants of a coral reef that lifted 25 million years ago. The twin islands — Phi Phi Don and the uninhabited Phi Phi Leh — became a national park in 1983, part of Hat Noppharat Thara-Mu Ko Phi Phi Marine Reserve.
Maya Bay, the crescent cove on Phi Phi Leh's western face, closed to visitors in 2018 after decades of boat traffic eroded 80 per cent of its coral. It reopened in 2022 with a daily cap of 300 people and a ban on motorised vessels inside the lagoon.
Today the archipelago draws half a million visitors annually, most arriving between 10:00 and 15:00 when tour groups converge on the same circuit: Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon, Viking Cave. Viking Cave, on Phi Phi Leh's northeastern face, shelters edible-nest swiftlets; local concessionaires harvest the nests three times a year, a practice documented since the 1700s. The cave's interior holds faded ochre paintings of Chinese junks, their age contested but stylistically consistent with 19th-century Hokkien maritime art.
Access to the national park requires a 400-baht conservation fee per foreign adult, collected at the Hat Noppharat Thara marine office in Ao Nang or paid on arrival at designated checkpoints. The fee funds reef restoration and waste management — Phi Phi Don, the only inhabited island, produces 25 tonnes of refuse daily during high season.
